Born in 1936, in Houston, Texas, Barbara Jordan was the first black person and first woman to represent Texas in the U.S. Congress when she became a House Representative in 1973. Additionally, Jordan made a memorable opening speech at Richard Nixon's impeachment just one year later. Web8 May 2014 · Tennis great Althea Gibson was the first Black woman to win Wimbledon. She predated the Williams sisters by 40 years but also dealt with the same racist beliefs that the sisters experienced. In the 1950s segregation was still practiced in American and despite winning championships, Gibson was denied rooms at hotels and shunned at restaurants.
